successful junior development program.
HISTORY
Perched on a series of small mesas and terraced between
fields of sandstone outcroppings is one of the best-kept secrets
in Encinitas, California.
Founded in 1965 by a group of local tennis buffs, the San
Dieguito Tennis Club has developed from a single-court facility
to nine acrylic-surfaced concrete courts, a pro shop, swimming
pool, two levels of parking and a clubhouse. Seven of the nine
courts are lighted for night play.
San Dieguito is home to some serious tennis players. Every
two or three years, the club managed to finance and build a
court or two, but it took 13 years to get around to constructing
a clubhouse.
San Dieguito Tennis Club stands out in a number of other
ways. It is family-oriented and has a large picnic ground for
post-activity barbecues. This area includes a playground with
swings, slides and monkey bars for the children.
Since it boasts one of the lowest "player to court" ratios
in the country (21 to 1), members seldom have to wait for a
court. And this is more than just a private club: members
actually own and manage the property and facilities.
The San Dieguito Tennis Club belongs to the USTA and the
North County Doubles League, whose members do battle with their
counterparts from other member clubs. The club has its fair
share of tournament-class competitors, as well as an abundance
of recreational players.
