TENNIS TIP

You have heard a lot of discussion about ‘open stance’, ‘closed stance’, and the ‘diagonal stance’ when hitting a forehand. Each stance has its advantages depending on the situation and the specific shot being hit.

There is one constant for all three stances and that is "should turn". The hips and shoulders rotating into the ball is the base for power. Of course you cannot do this unless you turn the shoulders first. The best way to assure hip and shoulder rotation is to push the racket back with your non-dominate hand. If you are right handed push the racket back with their left hand. This move will force you to turn your hips and shoulders.

A great example of this technique is a series of pictures of Andy Roddick’s forehand. To see pictures go to www.sandieguitotennis.com and click on TENNIS TIP.

CLUB NOTICES

If you want to receive club information email or want to make a correction in the web page directory contact me at bbhump@sbcglobal.net.

Please not leave anything in the refrigerator overnight unless it has your name on it. Items should be taken home after the event for which they were intended.  Unlabeled items will be discarded.

Check the "lost and found" cabinets in the clubhouse kitchen.  After June 15th all "lost and found" items that are left, will be donated to charity.

Hang up the court rollers after use. If they are left lying on the court, the roller flattens with a hard spot and there goes $50. They no longer work.

The clubhouse is locked at 6:00 PM. If you need a key after 6:00 PM check one out of the Pro Shop in advance.

Please lock the court gates when you leave. Non-members come and play at night when I am not around to check-up on them. Also, we have had vandalism around the clubhouse.

Register guests BEFORE you play. The same guest can come a total of two times per month. A member of an approved club may come an additional two times per month at non-prime time. Check with Brad for clarification.

New Pro Shop hours: 8-5 Tuesday and Thursday, 8-1 every other day except closed on Sunday.

Men’s Day hosted by Lynne Calkins

Thank you Lynne Calkins for making Men’s Day a special day! Sixteen men arrived at 8:31 AM to test their mettle against a very competitive group, agreeing of course, to abide by the rules and regulations of the game of tennis. A very large deli sub sandwich, salad, beer, potato chips and homemade brownies topped off a great day of tennis.

Competing for bragging rights were: Mark Vaughan, Kal Low, Roger Isaacson, Mike Low, John Oden, Ken Calkins, Jerry Mikschl, Dennis Gile, Sandy Bennett, Jim Mallen, Stephen Bancroft, Alan Watt, Mike Riley, Jere Horsley, and guests Doug Herman and Dan Genis. Check out the web site and photos from men’s day at www.sandieguitotennis.com

Rep Day – Team Uniforms- Ladies Round Robin Play Day hosted by Brenda Humphreys

The day had a great beginning! We rolled the courts, the sun was coming out and the ladies were on the courts warming up when BAM! One of those Southern California thunderstorms hit SDTC right in the middle of courts 1 and 2. The spirit of the typical SDTC Woman tennis player would not allow a little rain to dampen our enthusiasm for Rep Day. Everyone hung out in the clubhouse, checked out the clothes the reps were showing and were ready for the big party to begin at 10:15. There was Tail, Lily’s, Bolle, LBH, Wilson, Wimbledon, Latitude, JerDog, Kaelin, Marsha, and LeJay. Lot’s of choices!

We were fortunate to have talented super models available to show off the ‘goods’ for the fashion show. A very special "THANK YOU" to: Linda Carvajal, Leslie Echter, Lynne Calkins, Terri Macy, Nina Brodsky, Martha Schutte, Linda Durham, and Jessica Redding.

Also helping to select new team uniforms were: Mitzi Brock, Rachel Sandoval, Sherrie McJimsey, Nancy Chapel, Betty Wilson, Annie Leon, Pam Zimbalist, Joan Schulte, Jo Ramos, Liisa Kessing, Mary Kieffer, Caryn Rosen, Susan Ponder and son.

After much reviewing, thinking and politicking the popular decision was Lily’s Zenith Group Blue and Navy. Thank you Brenda and thank you to everyone who helped with setup and cleanup.

Check out the photos at www.sandieguitotennis.com click on PHOTOS and then click on MODELS REPDAY.

Adult/Junior Round Robin hosted by Brad and Roberta

Thank you Roberta Clark for helping me host the Adult/Junior Round Robin. We had a broad range of ages and ability levels that were accommodated through scheduling and cooperation! The youngest and a beginner was Rebecca Clark and the strongest were Jack and Drew Kutilek who are playing on their high school team. Good luck this season! Special thank you to Chris Fromme for helping and playing with all the levels. Congratulations to all the participants: Bryan Tietge, Gretchen Tietge, Rebecca Clark, Melanie, Ryan Lank, Ryan Saadat, Alexandra Fromme, Mechala Fromme, Andrew Fromme, and Trevor. Everyone was a winner today!

SDTC--The Club with HEART

There's a new Trophy in our Trophy Cabinet in the Clubhouse.  It is there thanks to the 29 wonderful women members of SDTC who entered the 2005 Annual Tennis for TOTS tourney Monday, May 19.  The event funds the AAUW  Homeless Babies Project, wherein we purchase diapers, formula, and baby food for the babies of homeless women in North County.  SDTC was presented with the very first Community Support Award, demonstrating their caring support of their community.  Thank you, gals!

I am very proud of the tremendous response from our membership.  You made it a tremendous success.  We raised over $24,000!!!  That's a lot of diapers!

Court Winners that day included our very own:  Dee Biller, Mitzi Brick, Leslie Echter, Elisabet Harth

Wendy Shaw, Martha Schutte, and Jude Swift.  You go, Girls!

I'd like to thank our members who sponsored the event. Thank you Diana Hoppe and Alan Watt.  We really appreciate your support of this worthwhile project, and I encourage our other members to get on board and sponsor the event in the future.  Our Vice-President, Barbara Rix, took the great publicity photo that appeared in the Union-Tribune on May 4.  That photo and article brought a tremendous community response.  Thanks, Barb!

Many of our members made generous donations to the event, which served to make it an even more spectacular day:  Barbara Pasquale, Brad and Brenda, Jeanette Statzer, Dee Biller, Dot Hogen, Jane Sanders, Jessica Redding, Jim and Llyn Mallen, Julie Chippendale, Kim Frost, Lorraine Harland and Barry Holcomb, Leslie Echter, Marolyn and Greg Ritter, Bob and Michelle Young, Jude and Tim Swift and Sharon and Marty Cooper.

Let's all support their business.  They are winners!

Thank you all so much for your generosity!

If you would like to get involved in an extremely satisfying event which really helps those less fortunate than we, please come join AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch…Just ask me, I have all the info. You know, I do believe that the most important thing is not in the winning, but in helping others win.  -- Thanks and Love, Lynne

Jul 16 Adult/Junior Round Robin

Aug 8-12 SDTC USTA Sanctioned Junior Championships (Brad Humphreys)

Our USTA Junior Sanctioned Championships are happening again this year. This is a great opportunity for local players to compete in a Sanctioned event. I use block seeding that is designed to hold out the best players until later rounds. Block seeding creates a great opportunity for new players to have competitive early round matches. If you would like to play or know someone who would like to play come into the Pro Shop and pick up an entry form. Divisions include: Boys and girls 10, 12, 14, 16, & 18 and under singles.

Matches start at 10 AM so club members have the courts for their early morning matches.

NEWSLETTER APR/MAY 2005

PRO REPORT by Brad Humphreys, USPTA Certified

Christina Fromme has suffered a mild heart attack and was in the hospital for a few days. She is home and doing well. There was no permanent damage and the doctor is treating her with medication. She is feeling much better and getting stronger everyday. She will be back on the court in no time. Friends should give her a call or send a card to cheer her up and let her know we care! Good luck and hurry back Christina! Chris is also doing fine but says he hopes that Christina gets back on her feet right quick.

What an opportunity to attend the Pacific Life tennis matches at Indian Wells. The tennis was awesome and my favorite part of the tournament was watching our club members participate in the Pacific Life Club Championships held March 18, 19 and 20. Dick Sanders and Jason Rouss in the Men’s 4.0 Doubles, and Kim Frost and Pam Zimbalist in the Women’s 4.0 Doubles represented San Dieguito Tennis Club. The competition was tough this year with over 40 teams representing their clubs in Southern California. Everyone was guaranteed at least three matches, tickets to all the professional events, a reception and a dinner awards party.

The event was so successful that we are planning to do it again next year. Pacific Life may expand the tournament and include other divisions. We will hold our own SDTC Club qualifying tournament next year November 5 & 6. Mark your calendar now and be in town to play!

And speaking of tournament tennis, our SDTC Ladies BB Winter League team is in the playoffs! Congratulations to captain Leslie Echter, co-captain Barbara Pasquale and teammates Dee Biller, Karen Budetti, Nancy Chapel, Julie Chippendale, Sharon Cooper, Sue Halenza, Lorraine Harland, Jane Isaacson, Nancy Kutilek, Barbara Lanz, Amy McCord, Carol McPeak, Karen Mitchell, Mimi Mulligan, Lorlei Petersen, Susan Ponder, Sylvia Sanderson, Rachel Sandoval, Diane Serhan, Jeanette Statser, Jollyne Tanner.

First round play-off is Monday, April 4th at San Dieguito. Come out and cheer them on! When they win they will be playing the semi-finals on April 11th and the finals on April 18th.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Jim Frost

Jim Frost is a native born San Diegan with family ties to the early 1900's.  As a member of the San Diego Yacht Club growing up, he was introduced to sailing and tennis.  While in high school he played on the tennis team and sailed in the 110 Nationals in New Jersey and won the event.  He still participates in those sports, along with snowboarding and snow skiing (after his last trip to Mammoth he has decided to quit snowboarding!)  His love of scuba diving has taken him to many exotic waters, such as Grand Caymens, Mexico, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Jim married his college sweetheart, Kim Kellum, in 1979.  Last year they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.  They share three children:  Nick, 21 (graduating from the University of Washington in June), Ryan, 18, (attending Northern Arizona University) and Kayla, 14 (who will be attending San Dieguito Academy in the fall).

Jim Frost has been a tremendous asset to the San Dieguito Tennis Club, serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering his time as Maintenance Chairman. When you look around the tennis club and see how great everything looks, think about telling Jim "Thank You".

Anytime there was a problem or a major project to work on just call Jim and he was always there to make things happen. Jim has also been an asset to our men’s and mixed doubles tennis teams participating in Winter League and USTA League. He has honorably represented San Dieguito at Sectionals in Mixed Doubles.

Jim is also an amateur woodworker and helped build the memorial base for the Mack Wilson plaque. Jim’s business, Frost Hardwood, also donated wood for this project and other projects.

Thank you Jim Frost for helping to make SDTC a special place to share with friends.

SAN DIEGUITO TENNIS CLUB

NEWSLETTER FEB/MAR 2005

PRO REPORT by Brad Humphreys

Two Thousand Five is going to be a special year for the San Dieguito Tennis Club and what could be a better way to get it started than a successful New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball. Thank you Louise Oxhorn, Jude Swift and Fe Watt. Also, Thank You to Ki’s for catering the Masquerade Ball!

The tennis club is approaching its 40th Anniversary and it is time to start planning a big time event to celebrate the occasion. Let me know if you have some suggestions or would like to help. We are planning some new activities this year including a Century Tournament over Memorial Day weekend. To qualify for the Century Tournament the players ages must add up to 100 years or more.

Participation in league play is continuing to grow at all levels in men’s, women’s and mixed. If you are not on a team and would like to play, let me know and I will help get you started.

If you do not have other plans for the Super Bowl, come play some round robin tennis before the game and bring some snacks to share with the fans during the game.

ROGER FEDERER AND THE FOREHAND STANCE

Federer hits his forehand from three different positions: open stance, semi-open stance and square stance.

The open stance forehand is effective in dealing with power or generating power. Very good for return of serve, being pulled wide and allows for a quick recovery.

The semi-open stance forehand offers greater versatility and can be used in offensive, defensive or neutral positions.

The square stance forehand is typically an offensive shot and is frequently used when moving forward and attacking.

How should you hit your forehand? Consider how you would like to improve your game and modify your forehand to help accomplish your goal. Keep in mind that the open stance forehand is hit with a semi- western grip, which also helps a player hit with more topspin. ‘Loading’ up on the outside leg, rotating the shoulders to increase torque, and rapidly increasing racket acceleration through the contact point generates force. Let me help you turn your forehand into a weapon of mass destruction!

Celebration of life

Our condolences to Doralee Zwimpfer whose husband Paul passed away on January 13, 2005. Paul and Doralee were able to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary two days before on January 11th. Doralee has enjoyed close family support and also appreciates the support from her friends at the San Dieguito Tennis Club.

Holiday Round Robin and Ladies Day hosted by Kim Frost, Marolyn Ritter and Jo Ramos

Thank you ladies for providing another special day at SDTC. I was unable to attend due to surgery but could hear the joy and happiness all the way up to the house! If Martha is having that much fun she may not want to go home. Thank you Kim for the entertainment and I heard that Pam Zimbalist put in an Oscar winning performance!

The New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball hosted by Louise Oxhorn, Jude Swift and Fe Watt

What can we say? This was the party of the year! This newsletter has become a photo-album of some very gracious, sharp looking people who were ready to party all night long. Louise, Jude and Fe transformed the clubhouse into a mystical fantasy that would have made Disney proud. Thank you Louise, Judy and Fe!

Rumor has it that they are willing to do it again next year. This is one party I do not want to miss and have already made my reservations for 2005. Tell your friends and sign-up early, the clubhouse will only hold 90 people.
