Brenda Humphreys
So many kind words, so little space in the tennis
Newsletter -
Brenda, you are appreciated by so many and most likely
don't even know it. We are here today to share a few thoughts
and interesting details about you from a few
friends. There were too many comments to include them all, so I
selected what Roberta (Brenda's past partner) had to say about
you. It is time to let the fish out of the bag. I personally
love your smile whenever I see you and the caring way you
operate our tennis pro shop . . . Terri
Roberta Clark says:
I believe that Brenda was one of the founding members of
our club. She didn't start playing tennis until she was in her
30's. Her first instructor told her that she would never be a
tennis player and years later she was competing round the
country in national tournaments.
She's as loyal as they come; and when it comes to San
Dieguito she cares for it fiercely as with many other aspects of
her life; Brad, her friends, her partners, her religion, her
family. As a captain, which she has served many times; she would
call every name that could possibly sub on our AA team so we
wouldn't have to default.
Brenda is very methodical playing with many rituals. She
likes to warm up with her partner before facing her opponents
and she likes her warm-up to follow a specific pattern. She
warms up in a very intense fashion. . . I have had to ask her to
slow down as I felt I might get hurt. (ouch) She is intense
about her sunscreen; she buys the best and you know by her white
face that she's protected. She also reapplies at every change
over - Some people feel that she should show up about 15 minutes
earlier then the rest, so she can accomplish all of her
routines.
She goes to the gym almost every morning; She believes in
the stick and rolls herself out before matches, during
changeovers, and after matches. She does NOT like to serve on
the sunny side and always gives her opponents the choice of
serve or side so that she can serve on the side and in the order
to her liking. I'm still confused about how that works.
Brenda never plays social tennis; you always get the best
she has to offer on the court on any given day. You will never
be underestimated by her as a tennis player. So watch out!
Brad and Brenda have extended themselves to all club
members . . . making a point to get to know everyone personally.
They have been the backbone of our San Dieguito Community for as
long as I've been a member, which is almost 20 years.
Barry Holcomb
Barry was born in the Midwest and lived in Indiana until
he was 14 when he moved out to sunny San Diego. He graduated
from San Dieguito High School. During the 1980’s, he was a
bartender at Dini’s in Del Mar, where of course, he met Lorraine
(who was a cocktail waitress at the time). They were married in
1988 and now have 3 children: Cole (17), Sean (15) and Madeleine
(13).
In the 80’s, Barry helped his mom open up a little hole in
the wall store on Birmingham Drive in Cardiff and they called it
Ki’s. Back then it was a natural foods and vitamin store. Since
then, it has grown quite a bit to become Ki’s Restaurant down on
Highway 101 in Cardiff.
As for Barry’s tennis career, during his 20’s he used to
play quite a bit, but he stopped for a while when he and
Lorraine started having children and he was working hard to
build the business at the restaurant. Barry started playing
tennis again when Lorraine signed up for a clinic with Brad
Humphreys at this quiet and friendly club named the San Dieguito
Tennis Club.
Barry has always been involved with coaching and when the
boys were still young he put together a Junior San Dieguito
Tennis Club USTA team. They very successful and went to the
sectionals at UCLA.
He has also captained the Men’s BB Team over the last
three years and they were undefeated in 2007, 2006 and 9-1 in
2005. Barry and Lorraine played on the USTA mixed doubles team
(3.5) and went to sectionals 2 years in a row in 2001 and 2002.
Barry and his sons were able to go to Wimbledon in 2005.
They had such a great time that one of his goals now is to go to
all of the Majors. Barry continues to have a huge love of the
game, having regular games set up at least 3 times a week, if
not more. He is an enthusiastic captain: always trying to do
what is best for the team as well as being fair to all the
players (a tall order for anyone!)
Thank you Barry, for being such a generous and great asset
to the San Dieguito Tennis Club!
DAVID SCHERMAN
The Come Back Tennis Player
David Scherman along with his wife,
Barbara, daughter, Sally, and son, Nico, joined the San Dieguito
Tennis club in 1976 when they moved to Encinitas from the
Washington D. C. area. All of the Scherman family enjoyed
the club as all four of them played tennis. David was an
avid tennis player and was also very active in the club as a
board member two, or was it three times? He is a past SDTC
Club President and enjoyed attending as many men’s days, parties
and pot-lucks as he could.
David’s job with the U.S. government took
him and the family to live in Ankara, Turkey in 1984, but they
came back to the area and the club in 1988. David had to
interrupt his tennis career several times in the past few years
due to two back surgeries, but he always came back to the sport
and the club. His latest hiatus was due to a bad knee,
which was replaced in early 2006. Since his knee healed,
David and his bionic knee are to be seen back on the San
Dieguito tennis courts again!
David has been a tremendous asset to the
San Dieguito Tennis Club for many years. He not only brings his
willingness to help when needed, but a dignity and level headed
analysis in the resolution of difficult problems. Thank you for
your contribution to SDTC!

ANNIE AND
MARK VAUGHAN
Although
Mark and Annie Vaughan are fairly new members of the tennis club
it didn’t take them long to become involved both on and off the
courts! They immediately became regulars at the Sunday
mixed doubles gatherings and in no time at all volunteered to
co-ordinate the monthly event. No one loves a party better
than Mark and no one loves tennis more than Annie!
While relatively new at the game Anne is proving to be a quick
learner and Mark’s game is giving his “seasoned” Father-in-law
(That would be Jerry Mikschl), a run for his money! Their
love of tennis and their willingness to get involved, have
enriched our club community. THANK YOU!
Mark and
Annie moved to Encinitas from Minnesota via a short stay in
Orange County in 1987. They have two children both graduated
from college. Their daughter, Abbie, made a name for
herself in basketball at La Costa Canyon and at Boise State
University. Basketball is Mark’s third passion, and he is
manager of a girl’s traveling team. Mark is a sales manager for
a medical equipment company and does a lot of traveling which
takes away too much tennis time. They have one grandchild
in Sacramento and another due in June.

DIANA E. HOPPE, TENNIS
PLAYER, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
For a while I
thought the only thing Diana did was play tennis because she was
always on the court practicing or playing matches for San
Dieguito Tennis Club on the Women’s 4.5 Team and the Mixed 4.5
Team. Diana is a fierce competitor and winner both on and off
the court.
Diana started
playing tennis at age 12 and has been hooked ever since. She is
currently taking a weekly lesson from Jessica, which has been
“really helpful and inspiring.” Other interests include
spinning, hiking, ceramic artwork, and visiting her three
nephews and niece in Oakland and San Francisco.
Diana does have
another life. She has
been voted one of San Diego’s Top Doctors in Ob/Gyn by her peers
of the San Diego Medical Society, as published in the October
2005 issue of San
Diego Magazine.
She does clinical
research trials (Pacific Coast Research Center) on
perimenopausal and menopausal health. In addition, she runs a
medical day spa, Spa Pacifica, which is located directly
adjacent to her Ob/Gyn practice.
Diana opened
her own private group practice in 1998, Pacific Coast Women’s
Health, located in Encinitas, which specializes in all phases of
women’s health, from adolescence to pregnancy, menopause and
beyond.
Diana also does
community lectures for the public on various topics at Scripps
Memorial Hospital, Encinitas. Next lecture series will be on
Anti-Aging, 01/06- 03/06. To see complete details, check
out her practice website and click on "seminars".

JIM FROST
Jim
Frost is a native born San Diegan with family ties to the early
1900's. As a member of the San Diego Yacht Club growing
up, he was introduced to sailing and tennis. While in high
school he played on the tennis team and sailed in the 110
Nationals in New Jersey and won the event. He still
participates in those sports, along with snowboarding and snow
skiing (after his last trip to Mammoth he has decided to quit
snowboarding!) His love of scuba diving has taken him to
many exotic waters, such as Grand Caymens, Mexico, and the Great
Barrier Reef.
Jim
married his college sweetheart, Kim Kellum, in 1979. Last
year they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They
share three children: Nick, 21 (graduating from the
University of Washington in June), Ryan, 18, (attending Northern
Arizona University) and Kayla, 14 (who will be attending San
Dieguito Academy in the fall).
Jim Frost has been a tremendous asset to the San Dieguito
Tennis Club, serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering
his time as Maintenance Chairman. When you look around the
tennis club and see how great everything looks, think about
telling Jim “Thank You”.
Anytime there was a problem or a
major project to work on just call Jim and he was always there
to make things happen. Jim has also been an asset to our men’s
and mixed doubles tennis teams participating in Winter League
and USTA League. He has honorably represented San Dieguito at
Sectionals in Mixed Doubles.
Jim is also an amateur woodworker and helped build the memorial
base for the Mack Wilson plaque. Jim’s business, Frost Hardwood,
also donated wood for this project and other projects.
Thank you Jim Frost for helping to make SDTC a special place to
share with friends.

MAROLYN AND GREG RITTER
When Marolyn and Greg Ritter joined SDTC twenty years ago they
were not aware of what an impact the club would have on both
their tennis and social life. Marolyn was a beginner player and
started playing league almost immediately. Over the years she
has had a variety of partners and has fond memories of matches
played with all of them. Marolyn is a regular at the Sunday
Mixers and she helped form the Wine Group. Though the social
events "we have met so many terrific people"
In 1990 Marolyn was given an opportunity to design and open an
Early
Childhood
Center
for
Bethlehem
Lutheran
Church
in Encinitas. Her children where old enough she felt she could
work out of the home again. Having spent all her career in
education and having a special interest in preschool age
children she decided it was an opportunity that was to good to
pass up. Unfortunately it over rode her tennis career . All
things have rewards and becoming a charter member of the Tuesday
Night Working Ladies was a plus. Not only did she begin to play
tennis once again she met a wonderful group of ladies who have
become very special friends. In 2000 when Marolyn decided to
retire from the child care center she was reassured she could
continue to play on Tuesday nights!
Retirement has been so much fun for both Greg and Marolyn...they
love to travel all over the world and when they can combine
travel with hiking they are especially thrilled. Sai! ling on
their boat is another pastime, this Spring they will be sailing
to
Mexico
and the Sea of Cortez for a couple of months. They also have a
condo in Telluride Co and Marolyn especially loves not only the
skiing but the fantastic beauty and hiking. If there was only an
ocean close by it would be perfect!
Marolyn is completing her term on the SDTC board and has been
our president the last year. Serving on the board has been
insightful and rewarding. The club would not run without the
work of these volunteers. Speaking of volunteering when she is
in town Marolyn is involved with Tennis for Tots, the past two
years she was the chairperson. She also helps elementary
children with reading, and is a director mentor for Child Care
Center! s. Having no grandchildren to spoil Marolyn loves to
give her time to anything that involves kids! Her son lives in
Colorado and her daughter in Cardiff so she hopes before too
long she can volunteer less and spent time with her own grand
kids! But for now life is pretty exciting and she couldn't be
happier.
